UK law review eyes abusive trends like deepfaked porn and cyber flashing

The UK government has announced the next phase of a review of the law around the making and sharing of non-consensual intimate images, with ministers saying they want to ensure it keeps pace with evolving digital tech trends. The review is being initiated in response to concerns that abusive and offensive communications are on the rise, as a result of it becoming easier to create and distribute sexual images of people online without their permission. Among the issues the Law Commission will consider are so-called ‘revenge porn’, where intimate images of a person are shared without their consent; deepfaked porn,…

Graham Brown Questions for Disorder by Johan Fundin

Which book (or other media) would you say is your largest influence? It’s impossible to mention just one book or film. My favourite plot structures—the premises of novels and movies which inspire me—revolve around high-tech corporate conflicts and conspiracies, medical horror and suspense, and overambitious mad scientist protagonists. Examples of favourite books are Coma (Robin Cook, 1977), Watchers (Dean Koontz, 1987) and The Island of Dr. Moreau (H. G. Wells, 1896). My favourite films are The Fly (David Cronenberg, 1986), Hollow Man (Paul Verhoeven, 2000) and Blade Runner (Ridley Scott, 1982). What part of the book was the most…

The Theresa May story

Theresa May to resign as prime minister Ministerial resignations and parliamentary rebellions that would have spelled the end for a prime minister in normal times seemed to bounce off her. She ploughed on, seemingly oblivious to the chaos around her, telling MPs “nothing has changed” and promising to deliver on the “will” of British people, even as her power over Parliament and control of her warring party drained away to nothing. It might have been different had she managed to win the 2017 general election. Image copyright Theresa May Image caption Theresa May married her husband Philip in 1980 Date…

How the Trump administration won a major policy shift from the Chinese on fentanyl

Washington (CNN)Officials from the Office of National Drug Control Policy were preparing a briefing for President Donald Trump late last year ahead of his meeting with the Chinese President at the G20 summit when they decided they needed a visual aid to drive home their point. The move, which came as the two countries grappled in an escalating trade war, was the product of months of lobbying by the Trump administration after a turn towards a harder line on the topic in 2017, multiple officials involved in the process told CNN. Over the next year and a half, negotiators chipped…

Mayor Pete Buttigieg, one charming guy.Image: Allison Zaucha for The Washington Post via Getty Images Pete Buttigieg has a certain familiarity to him. The South Bend mayor doesn’t come across as just another politician. He doesn’t pretentiously talk down to Americans. He doesn’t maintain a rigid air of professionalism or keep his personal life and his interests to himself. Buttigieg instead makes every effort to be incredibly transparent, personable, and down-to-earth. He is, quite frankly, an exceptionally charming guy. In the past few weeks, as he’s gained popularity in his bid for the presidency in 2020, he’s reminded many people…
